For this list I’m going to be staying away from the ‘Battle Royale’ genre altogether, I’ll leave that to everyone’s discretion. Instead I’m going to be looking at games from across many genres and for many audiences.

· Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links

For a long time, I wanted to get into Yu-Gi-Oh! The various incarnations of the TV shows made up a huge part of my childhood, but the game just seemed far too complicated and expensive. Duel Links changes all of that. The game is simplified and sped up, but it maintains the scale and excitement that the shows promised. Duel Links is available on Windows, iOS and Android which is a respectable number of platforms for a free game. But that’s not the best part, it supports cross-play. That’s a huge plus for any free game, allowing anyone with a smartphone or access to a PC to play together.

· Dota 2

A favourite of our very own, Kit Vickery, Dota 2 is a classic MOBA. Dota 2 has been around since 2013 and at the time of writing it has over 460,000 people currently in-game. Dota 2 is a pedigree for anyone wanting to get into the MOBA genre.

· Ironsight

The only FPS that will be featured on this list and it wasn’t without competition. However, the biggest draw I found for this game was the fact that it is produced by Aeria Games and distributed through their own website. Not only does this game play like old-school Call of Duty, but it also shows us that not everything has to come from big-name distributor.

· Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Another card game for the list, though this one plays a little different. Hearthstone is a massively popular card game based around the hugely popular MMO, World of Warcraft. But don’t think you have to be a keen WoW player to get into it. The game is quick to pick up but hard to master and there’s no need to put money into the game as most cards can be acquired with in-game currency which is easy to collect through quests. Hearthstone also supports cross-play across Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, meaning you can take the game anywhere with an internet connection.

· 8 Ball Pool

This is a stupid one and I know it. But 8 Ball Pool is honestly one of my favourite mobile games. Personally, I use the 8 Ball Pool game within Facebook Messenger, but the core principle remains the same, it’s pool. It’s insanely satisfying and is made by Miniclip, a company I have a great fondness for.
